TRAVEL RADIO & DX ADVENTURES IN UKRAINA & CRIMEA

I have been already in Ukraina in 2005 and my friend Sergey Kolesov invited me to spend two weeks in August 2008, so I started to look at the most practical way to go to Kiev.
In 2005 I utilized the bus service managed by Euroline Europe, cause I had a stop in Budapest, but this time I realized the Bus Service Milano to Kiev doesn't exist !!!!
You need to go to Bologna, cause the bus is coming from Firenze and after Bologna it stops in Mestre (Venezia) price is 130 Euro to go and 130 to come back from Bologna !...so I look at the flight  service, and the only direct flight Milano Malpensa to Kiev, is managed by the Ukrainian Airlines International, price is around 373 Euro plus TAX, go and back travel.

In march I booked my flights at the Milano Agency Distal & ITR Group, located in Via Paolo da Cannobio 2 in Milano  WEB : http://www.flyuia.com/eng/main_it.html located 200 meters from Duomo square.......they assured to call me if the time schedule should have been changed. So I had preliminary tickect for my flight departing from Milano  Malpensa the 4 August at 1310 hours.... no one phoned to me so at the end of July I confirmed to my friend Sergey the arrival time in Kiev Airport at 1755 hours Ukrainian time.
Sergey sent to me a message with a bit of humor : ".... OK, I will meet you at the airport, around 1815 hours .... inshallah! (as muslims say) !!

The 4 August, very hot weather in Milano, I arrived at Airport with the good train service called Malpensa Express (11 Euro one way) the price also include temperatures around +10°C !!!!!!!! like to be  in a train crossing the Transiberian line (outside night temperatures) at 0945 hour....and I did remained surprised to see no flight scheduled at 1310 hours to go to Kiev...hi.... what happened ???
So I asked to the lady at the BOX of DISTAL GROUP managing also the Ukrainian Airlines service (located next to the one of Aeroflot)  and she remained surprised the Milano DISTAL GROUP office did not informed me in June !!! of the new times of the flights to/from Kiev.
However no problem for me to wait till 1910 hours....the flight has been unified to the ALITALIA flight !!! with naturally a jet of Ukrainian International Airlines.... just an anticipation of the desastered situation of the ALITALIA blow up later this year.
I waited in the area at 2nd floor called "protests & suspirias" so I had many curious looking at situations of people searching new flights after they lost their original flights...or the flight was cancelled.....
With my portable DEGEN 1103 I listened at local area FM stations look like Radio Lupo Solitario 90.7 MHz in Samarate (very close area) http://www.radioluposolitario.it/ or Radio Popolare Network 107.6 MHz http://www.radiopopolare.it/ or Radio Ritmo 103.1 MHz in Cassano Magnago......another little town near Airport....or one of my preferred stations : Life Gate Radio 105.1 MHz http://www.lifegate.it/lg_radio/
After some drinks (little Mineral water, one coffee, one little glass of Gran Marnier liquor.....all in total cost 7,70 EURO !!!!!!) I had sufficent time to compile an FM Bandscan in Terminal 2 :

A real total caos of signals fighting on almost each frequency... the exact opposite of the quiet situation I should have found in  Ukraina the following day !

At 1705 I went to box 6 to do my ticketing ....and ....it has been a real caos....with all the passengers trying to reach the 3 open boxes for the ticketin. I don't understand why they do not coordinated a little, or this is a way to show how is life in Ukraina ???? no rules ..... hi !!!!!!, many ladies and nice girls (working hardly in Italy !!!!!! hi !!!), some families mixt ITA/UKR, and almost only one real
tourist.......guess who????
Luckly I got my place near window 25 F......perfect ! The departure fligth however had 50 minutes additional delay.....hi!
At around 2000 hours we started well, so we crossed the lakes area of Como and Lecco and flight over Bergamo town and Iseo little lake.....but soon after many clouds stopped the view.
So I saw many lightnings in the stormy clouds..... this perturbated  conditions effected the flight making additional laterness..... and  we all started dancing rumba..... always hard to have lunch in these conditions...hi !
We got a lunch with some plastic chicken and a big cake chocolate (luckly) in an Orange paper...... very good taste... may be offered by Orange Ukrainian party ???.

Here the FM Listening report, in part shortered by a "buldogg" hostess almost 65 years old..... who blaterated to me " HEY! ARE YOU USING A RADIO SET ???" I replied "YES...." and she cryed :" STOP IMMEDIATELY!!!" naturally I didn't stopped ......but listening under the table desk is not so....easy and practical....ha ha ha.
The flight troubles made my usual FM listening a bit shorter !!!!

Just in time to end the monitoring, the "Bulldog Hostess" annonced we are landing in Kiev airport, time 2315 localtime...  (UTC + 3 hours). The landing has been good, clear sky, 20 C. temperature.
At control pass I had a little problem with an UNFRIENDLY control guard, who "ORDERED" to me to FULLY COMPILE !!! the paper formular ... also the part to go OUT of the country..... Cause they keep the entering part of the paper and you get  the going out part of the paper......and if you lost it .....you will never go out....hi!!!!
The trolley at Kiev Airport is free, not look like in Italy (you need the 1 Euro coin)
So at arrival hall, I met Sergey and Lenka (his wife), waiting for me after about 6 hours delay.

We moved from north area by car to go to south area to the Yablonovka village, the ring roadway is quite good but not all with night lights, and however after 20 km the road become the usual "moon road" with holes and craters !!!!!!!!
Yablonovka village is located in the Kagarlyk (cemetery of Tatars warriors) district, and still for few km in the Kiev region, at around 100 km south from Kiev.
The house is located in a very quiet area near a little lake, 300 inhabitants, the sky offered a great view of the MILK SEA stars......a little dog called "Nemetz" made lot of "welcomes" together a little cat red and white named Chubays!

Sergey is working as Captain of Transport Merchant Ship, so he has busy times and also relaxing times, specially in summer, he listen with ATS 909 Sangean and he has installed a new Wellbrooke ALA1530 outside for MW DX & a long wire for SW DX
+ SONY AN-1 Antenna.
I had my DEGEN 1103 with 80 & 110 FM Filters..... ready to capture the Great Esporadic openings ! Around the farm of Sergey there are harvest stuff from a lot of apples, pears, grape trees.... Sergey has also a Satellite System with outside Dish to see more than 700 TV SAT Channels.... so imagine my particular interest to look at RAI Italy like to be in Milano !

SECOND DAY : Tuesday 05 august 2008 First ESporadic opening I wake up around 0900 hours and just for my usual curiosity I swiched on my DEGEN 1103 around 1000 hours and I remained quite surprised to listen to music look like from IRAN ...on 90.1 in // with 90.4 ......I asked to Sergey and he said : I never heard IRAN.... well we got it iYablonovka !!!!! The opening worked for almost 8 hours !

Unfortunatly the same day in the late afternoon we learned by SAT Televisions the war started in the Caucasus, and from the 8 August,  and the 9 August we saw the terribles live reports from the area, Here a declaration from the opposition party in Georgia which is cleary stating what happened :

Friday 8 August we had a trip to the town of Belaya Tserkov .....
Chiesa Bianca .....White Church ! to see the local station NET FM relay ERA FM operating on 103.4 MHz, also with local service, before to go, Sergey phoned to the station to make a meeting time, Miss Natalia in charge of the advertising office, invited us to visit the radio station.
The town of Belaya Tserkov (200000 people) 80 km to west
direction from our place needed about 2 hours to go, the speed limit on the normal roads of the Ukraina is 60 km/h. and there is the police to control the limit .......often the cars coming from the other side, do signals lights to advice the police control is near ..... good idea ! hi!!!!! and good cooperation !

We had to verify a reception report from Finland !
Miss Natalia very friendly talked to us, and Sergey explained our "strange" hobby, but unfortunatly the Director of the station was in holidays on the Black sea area, so the Director office with the "station seal" of the radio was closed....
No way to get the goal of our visit ! The station has no sticker, and
the house is also the local newspaper center.
We said thanks to Miss Natalia and may be Sergey will try again ! cause he also need a verification from them !!!! hi !!!.

Sunday 10 August travel to Crimea coast.
Our plans to visit Feodosiya coast area, where Sergey had reserved the rooms in a so called "tourist holidays house" stopped at Pervomaysk town.
What happened ??? Simply the car had a problem to the chassis, due to the many kraters and big holes in the roads and even in the highway M5 Kiev to Odessa we utilized to go to south..... so we stopped at Pervomaysk at a repair shop around 1500 hours local time.... I naturally switch on my DEGEN 1103 and imagine my surprise to listen to some Italian FM stations !!!!!!!.
Pervomaysk name is Russian, minds "FIRST OF MAY" cause the city has been founded the 1st May 1919 !

Unfortunatly the problem to the Sergey car resulted quite long to repair and to fix again the whole chassis to the car..... so we needed to find an Hotel for 2 nights..... first Hotel found had quite modern rooms with aircondioned, 50 Euro each one. But the repair car shop told us another Hotel less priced and with large garden, called Hotel Cafe Restaurant Allegro ! and we found it after some turns.... in streets with big Kraters ....hi! .... Korotchenko garden street, Hotel Allegro of Museum of strategic missile troops. Telephone : +380 (05161) 54774.
The Hotel is also kmown as the "Generals" Hotel, in the 2nd World War it has been the place of the Superior Command troups 43th rocket army of 46th missile division.

As you see the LOCAL area signals has been only 6 !!!!!!
A local storm with rain shower arrived the afternoon of the 11 August sunday, and inevitably this perturbated the reception conditions.

Luckly on Monday late afternoon the car was ready to restart our travel to Crimea coast.
The roads unfortunatly are quite rustics and with rail cross not levelled, so a real torture jamming for travellers, if you add many trucks and roads in very bad conditions, you have a very tragic panorama of how is travelling by car going to south to arrive to the east part of the Crimea coast.
To enter in the Crimea peninsula you need to pass Armyansk a cheak point,usually is no control, but in situation of danger,it may be activated.....
look like to enter in a different country, infact Crimea has a special
status of Autonomous Republic of Crimea, with separate Parliament.
No surprise the 90 % of the Crimean people is in favour of Russia, and the Soviet Marine Army of Russia is seattled in Sebastopol !.

Cause we arrived at the place reserved at Beregovoye Golden Beach area (near Feodosiya)
two days later, the choosen Holidays House had no more rooms availables, but no problem ! we found another Holidays House just 50 meters distant, there are many in the area.

Sergey and Lenka had a good room at first floor for 40 Euro per day with air conditioner, I got a room downstair, with no airconditioned and shower and also frigor, but with window looking to west....so with very hot in the afternoon, price 25 Euro per day..... breakfast cost 1 Euro and dinner cost 5 Euro....... sure not the prices of Rimini beach !!! hi!!!
The beach area (300 meters distant) is called the "golden beach"
cause the Mongols arrived by ships from Russian coast, this invasion so called the Golden Ordalic Invasion, around 1230 year. The area has been first found by Greek people, in VI century before Christ, was called Theodosia....groove up rapidly cause the good position for tradings with Asia.
Later the Mongols sold the area to Venezia and Genova, and the town name changed to KAFFA, "The Queen of the Big Sea", and till 1347 it has been a very important commercial place, but the TATARS finally destroy the city with the first batteriologic war ever seen in our planet !
Catapulting the bodies of the Tatars soldiers deads, in the city limits....... so the habitants of Kaffa, escaped with ships back to Genova...but with the colera illness "Yersinia pestis" , spreading it
(with rats in the ships) in following 25 years to the entire Europe......with a total deads of more than 25 millions of people (one third of the population of Europe !!!!!!!!)
Souvenir of this period it remains only the Tower of the defense Castle of the Genova settlement, all the others buildings and fortress has been totally destroyed by the precedents invasions of Tatars.
The Ottomans arrived from Turkey around 1453 year changing the name to Kefe.
In this period the city becomed again the most important commercial trading place of the Black Sea, particularily for esclaves markets, girls odaliscas for rich emires.....
Finally the Russian took the territory under their domination in 1783 and the name changed again to Feodosiya. Sorry for the long ...historical report....but it is quite important to understand why the people of Ukraine speaks almost all in Russian language, and they really DO NOT love the Turkish people.....
From 12 August tuesday I had good times to monitorate the FM Band with my DEGEN 1103, both in the Grinlandia residence (pergolato partly covered by grapes and with many many flowers),and at 1700-2000 hours on the Golden Beach, a pebbles beach with 2 meters straits of shells levelled look like plates pebbles, never seen one similar in Italy or Spain.
Naturally there are also pay beaches with sands and tukuls and beach chairs, you pay to be in these beaches, but they were around 500 meters distant to the west of the coast respect the Golden beach area (which is located in meaddle of the gulf of Feodosiya).
The port of Feodosiya at the west has big merchant vassels traffic and it is around 8 km to west.
The free beach with lot of families and tourists coming not only from all provincies of Ukraine, but also from Byelorussia, Russia, Lithuania, also with some local people selling bread cakes, or fruits, or smoked fishes, or fresh drinks or icecreams...... but NO NEGRON selling all the usual rubbish stuff you get usually in Rimini beach......

The owners of the Grinlandia residence, are original from Armenia, and I may say really very friendly, the daugther of the Manager,  Miss Rosanna also speaking in good English, after knowing I was  coming from Italy wanted to know everything about Venezia, her most dreamed place to be seen..... there was also a dog, a kind of "mastino napoletano" always doing...................

resulted also very funny cause the other people look at me look like  an extra terrestial..... Sergey put a metallic table and I had a good chair to sit me down .... and with headphones listening to the TURKISH FM stations.........ha ha ha ..... one man asked to SERGEY if I was from KGB ....ha ha ha....another invited me to drink VODKA !!! and another one said quite hungry...."...the Turkish is better if they stay ALL in Turkey !!! also the FM signals !! Ha ha ha.
The signals from Turkey in FM were coming from the coast in front of my listening place, around 250-400 km , but also signals from  Transmitters located in the mountains 350-500 km distants.

Additional problem, after 2000 local time, soon after the sunset.... thousands of famelic vampyr giant mosquitos started to fly on the  beach area.......so I and Sergey & Lenka...moved rapidly to the Grinlandia residence.....but then I listened in my room with open  window ....I had more hard battles...with them..........hi!!!!!! This has been the only real problem indeed.

On wednesday 13 august, around midday it arrived a Dxer to meet me, Mr. Andrey Burlaka he is an expert of Utility, and FM-TV Dxing, and he also is an expert for Russian rock music groups. He lives in Simferopol and he had to take two local busses to arrive to our place, from Simferopol to Feodosiya and another local bus from Feodosiya till Beregovoye, the bus stop was just 250 meters from our place.

Andrey speaks very little English, but we had good times ! He had a DEGEN 1103 not FM modified.....and just after 30 minutes after his arrival, in a very hot day (up to 40°C and very dry) a tremendous FM ESporadic opening started with many many stations from Germany, Sweden, Finland !!! and Poland, and he identified also one signal from Croazia !!! in my DEGEN !!!

MEDIUM WAVE BANDSCAN CRIMEA COAST
The listenings has been done at around local sunset hour, 1530-1700 UTC
On the "Golden Beach" area , the beach is mainly with just all kinds of peabbles shells plates. Signals on MW had a peak time from east, south east, and after 1800 UTC they started to be less strong in favour of signals from west, south west (for exemple all Greek MW stations becomed predominants).
The listenings after 1800 UTC has been done at Grinlandia residence 300 meters from Golden beach area.

16 August 2008 BACK TRAVEL to Central Ukraina :

On 16 August Saturday we let the Grinlandia residence to come back to Yablonovka.
First we arrived to Simferopol, with Road M25 (very desastered but luckly with not so much traffic, in 2 hours we arrived at Simferopol, where we stopped at an open restaurant, a sunny and windy day and very windy and hot (almost 40°C in the car).
Simferopol is the Capital of the Crimea, so no surprise the traffic in the city is really caotic and hard to believe, every round square is a....fighting meeting cross, everyone is trying to cross first...... and the result is a real nightmare...... hundreds of Krymtrolleybus, and more little ones, and historicals Skoda Bus 40 years old !!!are just stops in the meaddle of the streets...... and this is a normality.

Finally after 700 km travel and some stops to buy fruits and vegetables at very low price from villages people selling their products all along the highways and roads !!!!  .... we arrived at Yablonovka village around 2300 hours.

On 18-19 August weather resulted more perturbated by local area thunderstorms, one at night very "electric" with hundreds of riders, the air resulted more refreshed but this cancelled all the Esporadics possibilities to get favorable conditions on FM band.

I spent these days looking at the QSL collection of Sergey and to his banknotes and coins worldwide collections.

Naturally also looking at the TV SAT channels specially the National Geografic, Discovery Channel, and some Italian TV Channels, like Puglia TV, Trentino TV, Sardegna TV, Videolina ..... and also to Hustler Channel.... look at their WEB for more details ! http://hustlerworld.com/

Friday 22 August we started at 0900 hours the travel to bring me to the Kiev Borispol Airport, to make more easy the things, Sergey organized a tranfere on the Kiev ring Highway from his car to a private taxi, so I arrived around 1200 hours at the Airport, and after a short wait I got the ticketing for my travel back to Milano. http://www.airport-borispol.kiev.ua/eng/about-kbp/
The Airport is well organized, there is a Baggage packing service, and also a place to let your baggages for 24 hours.
The ticketing hall is not so large as Malpensa Airport, but many videos explain the number of the boxes of the flights,to do the ticketing, the troillers are free and you may utilize them also look like chair while you wait the tickecting.
After you get your flight tickect (I got it as usually with the place A 22 near window !) you go up floor and you have large solar hall there you wait the departure GATE informations, after you get the GATE departure, you pass first a baggage and personal control, quite soft and you arrive in the hall to controll your passaport and the paper you have FULLY COMPILED at your arrival, many many passengers to be controlled .........and inevitably 30 minutes wait !!! but the space is open to SMOKERS.......a realsurprise indeed ....... well no problems for my personal control and finally I arrived to the departure gate of my flight back to Milano.
Sunny day, but not hot. Luckly no later departure, some more Italian Tourists coming from Crimea Yalta coast. The hostess this time all young and more friendly.
So no problems at all to utilize my radio set portable after the light of the safebelt was switch off (I must say almost immediately !!!) after the departure at 1550 hours.

So it arrived time for a lunch at 9000 meters above Ukraine going to border to Poland , Slovakia and Hungary. Clear sky in a good sunny afternoon, so no dancing lunch ! hi!! Unicum plate : boiled pasta with some vegetables. The orange big cake naturally to complete the lunch. All quite appreciated.

The Ukrainian Airline International jet plane going to approach to Malpensa Airport and inevitably the Monte Penice superpower TXs site dominated the scanning on the FM...... perfect landing and in perfect time !
